The Photo-catalyst Industry Association (PIAJ) http://www.piaj.gr.jp/roller/ operates a certification system so that photo-catalytic materials and products containing them can be used appropriately. Evaluating them according to certain criteria helps to eliminate imitations and further improve product quality and performance.

The PIAJ uses the JIS test method to measure photo-catalytic performance, provides certain performance criteria including multifactorial verification and evaluation, and sets certain performance standards regarding product sustainability and safety.

The PIAJ mark is the certification mark given to a photo-catalytic product that assures that the Photo-catalyst Industry Association recognizes it and that its performance & methods of use are appropriate

The "NU-COAT AP" series Apatite - titanium dioxide coating agent has met the standards defined by the PIAJ and has obtained the PIAJ mark, certifying that it performs the functions of air purification and self-cleaning.


Product characteristics


Apatite is one of the main components of teeth. It adsorbs proteins from bacteria and viruses, and adheres to ammonia, nitrogen oxides, aldehydes, etc. It also has excellent antibacterial effects.
Apatite covers the titanium dioxide, and this forms the basis of the photo-catalytic effect. Apatite adsorbs substances even when it is not exposed to light (for example, at night) and when the titanium dioxide is exposed to light it causes the decomposition of the substances adsorbed by the Apatite.
The Apatite, which is inorganic, serves as a spacer so the titanium dioxide does not touch the substrate directly. Thus, it does not damage the substrate itself.
Conventional photo-catalytic coatings require a two-step application: first titanium dioxide and then a protective layer. But, apatite photo-catalytic coatings can be applied in one step. This greatly shortens construction periods and labor costs, so photo-catalytic coatings can now be had at an affordable price.

 

Photo-catalysis is very similar to the photosynthesis performed by plants.
Photosynthesis produces oxygen from carbon dioxide and water, using chlorophyll as a catalyst. When the photo-catalytic part of a coating agent, titanium dioxide, is exposed to ultraviolet rays, it enters a hydrophilic state which attracts water and releases ionized oxygen, which aids decomposition.
This destroys harmful contaminating substances and results in the coating’s self-cleaning effect.
That is why these coatings are very effective on both exteriors and interiors.
